Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Course
Required training for employees who handle, offer for transport or transport Dangerous Goods.
Transportation of Dangerous Goods legislation in Canada requires training in the handling and transportation of dangerous goods for all workers involved in these activities. Safe and efficient handling of dangerous goods during shipping in any mode of transport is of basic importance to continued, safe operations. The frequency with which shipping of dangerous goods occurs makes this training relevant and required learning. Safe transportation of dangerous goods is essential in order to protect the environment, the general public as well as response personnel. This course is intended for those employees who may be called upon to coordinate the transfer and shipping of dangerous goods in any environment. This basic level of training directly pertains to handlers, shippers and transporters (drivers) of dangerous goods. This training follows the legislative requirements specified under the Transport of Dangerous Goods Act. This course acts in due diligence and permits the certification of personnel who have met the requirements of the course.
Course Objectives:
This Basic Training Course follows the legislated training requirements specified under the Transport of Dangerous Goods Act for Road and Rail shipments. Participants will learn all classes of dangerous goods and, all the legislative requirements for properly handling, shipping or transporting dangerous goods. Practical exercises will help the participants gain better skills in handling, shipping and transporting dangerous goods. More specifically the following required training will be provided:
- Definition of the nine classes of dangerous goods and their associated hazards;
- Shipping names, classes, UN numbers and packing groups for the dangerous goods normally encountered on the job;
- Safety marks such as labels and placards that are used to identify the different classes of dangerous goods;
- Knowledge of the information that must be on a shipping document;
- The requirements regarding mixed loads and the need for segregation of incompatible dangerous goods;
- How to choose the proper means of containment for dangerous goods;
- What to do if the shipping documents, placards, labels, other safety marks or means of containment seem inadequate or incorrect;
- What constitutes an accidental release and the reporting requirements if an accident happens;
- Proper use of all equipment that is used in the handling, offering for transport and/or transportation of dangerous goods,
- Dangerous goods requiring Emergency Response Assistance Plans (ERAP)
All participants, successfully completing the course, will receive a Transport of Dangerous Goods Certificate that, when signed by the employee and the employer, will be valid for three years.
