Hazwoper - Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response

Technician Level Training

Length:16 hours (2.0 days)
Pre-requisite: HAZWOPER Operations

Hazardous Material Technician Level training will benefit: emergency response personnel potentially exposed to chemical hazards.

The goal of this training is to provide these people with the know-how to respond to any dangerous incidents in a safe and effective manner. Technician Level Emergency responders are trained to deal with emergency incidents involving hazardous materials in an offensive manner. Technician level training, as promulgated by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is 40 hours in duration and involves elements necessary to carry out safe emergency response tactics. Topics include health and safety planning, Personal Protective equipment selection and use, decontamination, principles of size-up, strategy and tactics, hot zone activities, and general hazardous material knowledge. This course is the final 16 hours of the training. The Operations level training is a pre-requisite.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends effective training for Emergency Response. Magellan courseware is based on United States HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response OSHA 1910.120) and follows National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 472) Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents in specifying necessary skill sets for achieving competency.

According to the EPA, there are over 63,000 hazardous chemicals in use. Dealing with emergency situations involving these chemicals is essential in order to protect the environment, the general public, as well as emergency response personnel. This workshop is directed towards those who may be called upon to respond to hazardous materials, chemicals, substances, or waste emergency at a fixed facility environment or in a transportation incident. The course is theoretical training. All aspects of a response operation will be taught including introduction to containment techniques and appropriate mitigation measures of spills. The course particularly emphasizes personal safety. The curriculum is varied to reflect the personnel being trained and as such, is very site specific.
