Hazardous Substance Spill Control - Level 2

This course is specifically intended for personnel who have responsibilities for responding to a hazardous substance spill or leak in their workplace. More specifically, for staff members who will be responsible to: assess the situation; determine the best strategy and tactics for controlling the spill or leak; select the proper Personal Protective Clothing (PPE); clean up the spill; and, complete the decontamination process.  Personnel selected for this course will have previously completed the Hazardous Substance Spill Control Level 1course.  Supervisors and other senior decision makers can also benefit from attending this course and gain a better understanding of the environmental emergency response plan, and the spill response team’s role and responsibilities following a spill or leak and the spill control equipment and personal protective clothing requirements.


The course builds on knowledge and skills acquired during the Hazardous Substance Spill Control Level 1 course and provides participants an opportunity to gain practical experience in: scene assessment; spill control and clean-up; decontamination process; spill control equipment; and PPE.  This Level 2 course will help our clients meet their increased responsibilities under the Canada Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, Federal and Provincial Regulations.  The course is designed to incorporate the client’s Environmental Policy, Directives, Emergency Response Plan,
 All participants, successfully completing the course, will receive a Certificate of Participation.
           

Learning objectives are:

    • Scene approach (Isolate/Secure the scene, Establish Command);
    • Assessing the situation (Spill, Safety/Security);
    • Gather Information;  (Information Resources, Air Monitoring);  
    • Personal Protective Equipment;
    • Selecting, care and maintenance of spill kits;
    • Spill Control, and Spill clean up;
    • Techniques of decontamination;
    • Handling, storing hazardous materials; and,
    • Spill Reporting
