Building Evacuation Procedures Course


Occupant Evacuation Procedures
This course is intended to give building occupants a better understanding of procedures to be followed in evacuating the building during an emergency and a basic understanding of fire safety and life safety systems.  All building occupants need to know what to do in case of fire, bomb threats, suspicious package events or other emergencies.
At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Determine the appropriate response to emergencies in accordance with the Workplace Emergency Evacuation Plan.
  • Understand basic fire science.
  • List the classes of fire.
  • List the means of extinguishing a fire.
  • Select and use the proper extinguisher.
  • Describe the building life safety systems.
  • Identify the building alarm tones.
  • Understand the building voice communication messages.
  • Assist a person in an emergency.
  • Describe actions to take during other emergencies such as: medical emergency, physical threat, demonstration, roof collapse, earthquake, severe storm, flood, electrical power failure, bomb threat, suspicious package event, chemical/biological threat, and hazardous material including radiological incidents.  

Participants on this course will gain confidence in their capabilities to cope with an emergency.  They will obtain a good understanding of what to do and how to help others in case of an emergency in their workplace. This course meets the requirements of the Canada Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, part xvii and the National and local Fire Codes. All participants, successfully completing the course, will receive a Certificate of Participation
